Bill Mooney Racing Recap: NLRA at River Cities and Hibbing

On Friday night at the River cities Speedway Bill raced with the NLRA during the World of Outlaws sprint car event. Bill started on the pole of his heat race, but they watered the track right before the start and he slipped back to fifth. Before the start of the main event Bill was moved to the front of the field as the NLRA remembered the third anniversary of his brother Michael’s death with the four-wide tribute and a missing man formation.

Bill started 14th and it slid back to 15th early in the race. He then moved past Chris Olson, Tom Corcoran, Harold Schill, Jeff Massingill and Dustin Strand to move up to eleventh. Bill avoided disaster when a pile up on a lap 17 restart involving Steffen Snare, Dustin Strand and Cole Schill pushed the left rear quarter panel of Bill’s car up against the left rear tire. Before this caution Bill was given a two spot penalty for running on the curb on the inside of the track. Bill made up for that by passing Zach Naastad and Donny Schatz, who had just won the World of Outlaws feature and a mechanical failure for Joey Pederson moved Bill up to an eighth place finish.

Saturday nights’ event in Hibbing went just as last years’ debut at the track. Bill started fifth in his heat race, and he was in a transfer spot early in the event when a rookie driver in front of Bill spun, leaving him no place to go. Bill was charged with the caution and was sent to the rear of the field. He finished seventh in the race relegating him to the B Main. He started tenth finish fifth in that event, falling short of racing into the feature. Bill used an NLRA provisional start the feature. He started 22nd and finished 23rd.

Bill has three top fives and six top tens in ten nights of racing this year. A busy stretch of four NLRA races and four days starts at the Norman County Raceway in Ada, MN on Wednesday and Thursday, then moves the I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls, MN on Friday and concludes the Viking Speedway in Alexandria, MN on Saturday.
