A Tough Week for Bill Mooney Racing

Two DNF’s, and two top 15 finishes sums up last weeks’ action, while there are three more races scheduled this week for Bill Mooney, and his No. 2 freehearingtest.ca Millar powered Rocket.

Racing started last Thursday as the NLRA season schedule resumed at the Norman County Raceway in Ada, MN. When the 2 car was unloaded it had brand new sheet metal covering the race car. In Bill’s heat race the brand new sheet metal would fail to go a full lap without being crinkled, as Bill became collected in a first lap pile-up. Bill survived the melee and finished second in the heat, and drew the fifth starting spot for the main event. Bill was running solidly in the top ten when the car started starving for fuel, and eventually shut off. After nearly an hour of searching, the problem was found to be foam from the fuel cell lining clogging the fuel line.

On Friday night Bill would continue his pursuit of a track title at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. Another low pill draw gave him the sixth starting spot in the heat race. He missed the final redraw spot by one, giving him the tenth starting spot in the feature. Bill was racing to stay in the top ten when he was squeezed into the outside wall on lap seven, breaking his right front wheel, sending him off the race track. Bill Mooney Racing crew member Brian Bork nearly had the tire changed when the race resumed, and Bill was unable to restart the race.

Saturday the Bill Mooney Racing team made its’ first appearance this season at the Jamestown Speedway in Jamestown, ND. Bill started fifth and finished fourth in his heat race earning him the 16th starting spot in the feature. The track was not racy, which is very abnormal for the quarter mile Jamestown oval. Bill bounced between the 14th and 16th spots for most of the race, coning home in thew 15th position.

Racing wrapped up Sunday night at the Buffalo River Race Park near Glyndon, MN. Bill drew his worst number of the week, a 199 out of 200, gave him a last place starting spot in his heat race. He moved up to fourth in the first two laps, only to have the track go away by lap four, missing the redraw again by one, handing him the 13th starting spot for the final feature of the weekend. Bill slipped back to 15th, but with a customary late race charge, Bill passed three cars in the last nine laps to finish in the 12th position.

Bill has eight top fives, and 14 top tens this season, and remains fifth in points with the NLRA, fourth at River Cities, and sixth at the Red River Co-Op Speedway in Winnipeg. Bill is scheduled to race three straight nights this week, starting Thursday in Winnipeg, continuing Friday at River Cities, and Saturday at the Devils Lake Speedway near Doyon, ND.
