After another hard charge and runner-up performance last week, Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Millar Engines MasterSbilt by JMR, continued a series of solid runs with two top fives in NLRA competition last week.

Thursday at the Red River Co-Op Speedway in Winnipeg, it was the NLRA Can-Am special. Bill started fourth, and finished second in his heat race to Dustin Strand. The pair have arguable been the best two drivers in the area this month.

Bill redrew the fourth starting spot for the main event, and avoided disaster at the start, as Shane Edginton spun in turn two right in front of Bill, as he was the first car to take evasive action to miss Edginton’s No. 4 car.

Bill moved to the front row on the restart after Edginton moved to the rear of the field. The 2 car spun its tires on the green, allowing Balcaen to move by for second briefly, as Strand opened up a ten car length lead.

Bill moved back by Balcaen for second up top on lap three, then closed in on Strand during the next few circuits. Strand remained in his sights as the pair weaved through traffic for the duration of the event. The second place finish was a welcome sight as the new car hadn’t been all that great at home since in was built in early July.

Friday night at River Cities, Bill’s son Owen drew his dad the pole for the heat race, which eventually lead to a heat win, as Bill and World of Outlaws Sprint Car Champion Donny Schatz went door-to-door for the lead for the bulk of the race. Bill held off every one of Schatz’s advances as the 2 car rode around the track at its’ customary home on the cushion for the victory.

Bill redrew the pole, and once again found his arch nemesis of the month, Strand, to his outside a the start. Bill, however, took the advantage this time as the pair hit turn one. Bill lead the first two circuits as Joey Pederson took second from Strand and set his sights on Bill for the lead. Pederson took the point on lap three, running the low side as Strand and Bill began another all-too-familiar August tussle for position.

Strand took second, and after a caution a few laps later, Jeff Hapala began to battle with Bill for fourth. Bill and Hapala continued to go door-to-door for fourth as Hapala ran the cushion, leaving Bill with the low groove.

After another caution for a pileup in turn four, Bill and Hapala were able to then switch lines in the ensuing laps, as the pair joked afterwords how they would have liked to have lined up the other way on the restart. With each driver in their preferred line, the continued they battle for fourth. Mooney pulled away from Hapala in the final laps before the final caution of the race.

On the final double file restart, Bill looked to go door-to-door again with Schatz for third in a replay from the earlier heat race. Bill remained the only car in the top four running the top. Schatz pulled away, as Zach Naastad challenged Bill low for fourth in the remaining laps. Bill held on four fourth, collecting two more top fives in NLRA competition on consecutive nights.

2016 Stat Attack:

Bill has two wins, eight podiums, twelve top fives, and 20 top tens in 26 nights of racing this season.
