It was a strong opening salvo last Friday for Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Lucas Oil Millar Engines powered MasterSbilt by JMR, as he lead early, and went on to secure his first podium of the 2018 season at the River Cities Speedway.

Bill started the night with a bit of a task on his hands, as he was slated to start fifth in his heat race. He slid back to sixth, but charged back, passing Brandon Fuller and Travis Robertson to climb to fourth by the end of the race.

A favorable re-draw gave Bill the third starting spot in the main event, and he wasted no time moving forward.

Bill moved past Brad Seng for second, charging off the bottom of turn four to take the spot at the line. Bill nearly beat Dustin Strand back to the line as well, but the trio went three-wide in turns one and two on lap two, with Bill securing the top spot down the backstretch.

It’s very rare to see Bill work the bottom on any race night, but you had to look to the bottom of the speedway to find the two car, as the car was working well against River Cities high inside burm.

Bill and Strand waged war for the top spot, racing door-to-door for the next handful of rounds, with Bill leading lap five.

Bill lost the lead to Ricky Weiss just before the events’ only caution, which came just before the half way point of the twenty lapper.

Bill chose the inside on the insuing restart, and resumed his battle with Dustin Strand for the runner-up spot.

Strand eventually pulled away, but Bill was able to fend off charges by fellow Manitobans Shane Edginton and Mike Balcaen, while at the same time, moving to his customary approach of running the high line for the duration of the feature.

Bill, upon watching video of the race once the night was complete, remarked that the car didn’t look “quite as evil as it felt.” The third place result secured Bill’s first podium finish of the young season.

What’s Ahead:

Bill is set to take part in the 21st season opening weekend events at River Cities on Friday, and at the Devils Lake Speedway in Saturday.
