After a tough opening night the week before, Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 OMG Chocolaty Clusters Millar Powered MasterSbilt, made a big improvement, collecting a third place finish during the second week of racing at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.

Bad draws continue to plague the two car, as a 197 out of 200 was drawn, placing Bill in the sixth and final starting spot in his heat race. Bill got by Zach Naastad and Robert Bladow on the first lap, on a very narrow, and fast track surface that put passing at a premium. Bill finished in the fourth and final redraw spot, which couple with last weeks’ 13th place finish, put Bill on the front row of the main event.

Although he finished fourth, he was still the third fastest driver in the race, running a nearly twelve second lap at 141 and a half Km/h.

For the main event, Mike Balcaen got a jump at the start, and was out front by nearly a second when Bill started reeling in the veteran in his No. 10 car. Bill ate into the lead, and shrunk it to under half a second by lap eight. Bill and Balcaen rode past a pair of lapped cars unfazed, with Bill riding Balcaen’s back bumper down the straightaways as each lap clicked off the scoreboard.

After a late caution for Bladow with six laps left, Bill chose the outside lane for the double file restart. As the green flag flew, Shane Edginton got a better bite of the bottom of the track, and moved into second, as Bill held off challenges by Joey Pederson and Brad Seng, a pair of drivers that has won seven of the last eight track championships. Bill ended the race in the third spot as part of an all Canadian podium with Balcaen and Edginton.

Bill was the second fastest driver, just one-one-hundredth of a second off of Balcaen’s fastest lap, and just two-tenths of a second off the track record at 11.7 seconds, at an average speed of 148 km/h.

2016 Stat Attack:

Bill has one podium, one top five, one top ten in two nights of racing thus far this season.
