One night after he took the point lead at the Red River Co-Op Speedway, Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Budget RV Millar powered MasterSbilt by JMR, raced to another podium finish at the River Cities Speedway last Friday night.

On Thursday night at the Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg, a near late arrival to the track due to construction and trains was actually a benefit. Bill drew a five out of fifty, and started on the pole of his heat race. A second place finish to defending national champion Dustin Strand, paired with his high point average, placed Bill on the outside of the third row in the main event.

Bill went four wide with Ricky Weiss, Kevin Sexton, and Mike Balcaen at the exit of turn two at the start, before falling back to seventh. After running on the access road off the backstretch on the second lap, he closed back in on Balcaen’s back bumper for sixth.

The pair passed Paul Veert on lap four, then Bill lost a spot to Sexton shortly thereafter. Bill took the spot back with eight laps completed, before a caution flag flew at the halfway point.

Another caution came on the first restart attempt, as Bill was stuck on the bottom of the double file restart on both tries. Bill went three wide with Sexton and Balcaen off of two on the restart, but the latter pair went on to battle three wide with Mike Martin for fourth. Bill reeled Balcaen in, once again, and moved to his outside in three and four with seven laps remaining.

Bill and Balcaen battled door-to-door, not only for position, but for the point lead. Bill came into the night one point behind Balcaen for the lead, but went into the feature tied after Balcaen finished behind Bill in the heat race.

After one final caution set up a green-white-checkered finish, Bill used the bottom to move past Mike Martin down the backstretch on the final lap, but Martin took the spot back at the finish line. Bill stayed in front of Balcaen, however, taking the point lead by one point heading into this Thursday night.

Last Friday at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, it was mid-season championship night. 17 cars signed in, so Bill’s fifth place spot in the point standings earned him the third starting spot in his heat race. Bill finished third, handing him the fifth starting spot in the main event.

After Bill’s win two weeks ago, Bill told the live audience on Midco Sports Net that, “I like running the top. I always say running the bottom is like going to work.” Fast forward two weeks, and “go to work” he did, as he resumed his fervent battle with Balcaen from one night prior, this time, utilizing the bottom of the track.

With nine laps remaining, Bill was so low, the nose of the 2 car struck a tractor tire, but it didn’t slow his progress, as he moved past Balcaen and Joey Pederson for a podium finish. When asked about his run in with the tire Bill replied “We built some real good bumpers this year!”

Stat Attack:

Bill has three wins, eleven top fives, and 13 top tens, in 14 night of racing this season.
