Last Friday night marked the beginning of the 2017 season for Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Lithia Toyota Millar Powered MasterSbilt by JMR, and he kicked it off in a big way, picking up the victory at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.

Last Friday night marked the opening of a new season, and like most racks in the area, River Cities is using a new scoring system.

But it was same old same old at the pit gate, as he drew 91 out of 100, handing him the final starting spot in the heat race. Bill wasted little time making up for the poor draw, however, as he ran around the inside of the track and climbed all the way to second at the end of the heat.

Opening night at most tracks are draw redraw, so Bill was re-drawn the outside pole for the main event.

Bill took the lead at the start, eventually building an eight-tenths of a second lead by lap five. As Bill approached the back of the field on lap eight, Zach Naastad was a second behind in second place. Shortly after that some debris appeared on the track, debris that Bill hit on the two laps before the caution on lap eleven, but the tires on the 2 car remained inflated.

On the restart, Bill had Naastad and Naastad’s teammate, the defening Wissota national champion, Dustin Strand on his back bumper. Bill retained the lead on the restart, fending off a brief peek to the inside by Naastad, but quickly built another half-second lead in the ensuing laps.

With two laps to go, and with Dustin Strand in second, Bill had one lapped car in his sight. A quick slide job on the lapper in turn three while coming to the white flag all but sealed the victory.

Bill told Jon Roberts in victory lane. “I don’t know if the car could have been much better than that. We worked pretty hard this winter, basically just trying the best out of what we already had. We had pretty good equipment, and I don’t think we were getting all we could out of it last year. We made some steps to try and get all we can out of everything we’ve got. I don’t imagine how it could have been much better than that tonight.”

Bill on the restart. “I was looking at the number board, and I saw the 17 [Naastad] and the 71 [Strand] were there, and that’s never a good thing. I was waiting for the snooker from either one of them on the inside, but I was confident enough in the car, especially in [turns] three and four, that even if one of them got inside me on the back straightaway, that I’d probably be able to get them back in three and four.”

Bill will look to go two-for-two this Friday night at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.
