After two tough nights, Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Pizza Ranch of Grand Forks Millar powered MasterSbilt by JMR, finished last weeks three race stretch strong with a podium finish at Devils Lake

Last Thursday night, the Northern Late Model Racing Association made their annual trip to the Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg. Bill drew the pole for his heat race, and finished a close second to World of Outlaw champion Donny Schatz.

Bill started sixth in the main event, and looked like a contender at the start, climbing up to fourth, battling Cole Schill for position in the first part of the race. The race had a few cautions in the first half of the race, but during the green flag laps, the track took rubber, and the 2 car didn’t respond to the ever changing track surface.

Bill put up a good fight, trying to make the high line work, but the rubber on the bottom line killed any momentum he had built up, and Bill ended up 19th at the end of the race.

On Friday, Bill once again travelled south the the River Cities Speedway, where the NLRA were co-headlining with the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars. Bill’s draws went back to normal, as he drew the seventh starting spot in the nine car heat, but in true Bill Mooney fashion, charged all the way up to the second spot at the end of the race. Race winner Brandon Fuller bobbled on the cushion in turns three and four on the final lap, but Bill was barely edged out at the line.

Bill, for the second night in a row, redrew the sixth starting spot in the main event, and, once again, looked really fast early. But he and Travis Robertson made contact on lap three, sending the latter spinning and causing a caution. Bill was charged with the caution and sent to the back. As the field came to the green flag on the restart, Bill’s steering broke, sending him pit side with a last place finish.

On Saturday night, Bill headed west to the Devils Lake Speedway for the third night of NLRA action. Looking to turn his luck around, Devils Lake has been friendly to Bill, with a win in 2013, and a pair of runner-up finishes to Wissota national champion Dustin Strand last season. Bill, for the third night in a row, finished second in his heat and redrew the sixth starting spot for the main event.

Bill wasted no time moving up to the third spot, where he spent most of the race. Bill would have to fend off challenges by Cole Schill in the final three laps, eventually collecting another podium finish in Devils Lake.

Stat Attack:
Bill has three wins, 18 top fives, and 23 top tens, in 27 nights of racing this season. Bill is still second in points at the Red River Co-op Speedway, seven points behind Mike Balcaen. He’s also fourth in the standings at both the River Cities Speedway, and with the Northern Late Model Racing Association. Bill is now in the top ten in the Wissota national points standings.

What’s on Tap:
Another three race stretch is on tap for Bill this week. Thursday night, he returns to the Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg. Then its back to the River Cities Speedway on Friday, before the weekend ends on Saturday at the Greenbush Race Park in Greenbush, MN with the NLRA.
